Caller Story – February 10, 2024

Each week we will post a summary of interesting and representative 211 calls. This week, we have a connection from Manitoba.

So many people want to help others in need, but do not know the best way to assist. 211 Service Navigators can suggest resources and agencies that know how to help those who are going through difficult circumstances including those who are experiencing homelessness.

A concerned member of the public was on her way home, and saw an individual sleeping in a bus shelter. She told the Service Navigator that the individual was covered in blankets, but considering the extremely low temperatures in Winnipeg at the time of her call, she was worried that the person might freeze that night. She stated that she did not know what to do or whom to call because it did not appear to be an emergency for 911, as she had not seen signs of medical distress when she passed the person.

The Service Navigator informed the caller of an outreach program she could contact right away. She could ask them to do a wellness check and make sure that the individual was safe and did not need anything. She was relieved when the Service Navigator relayed that information. The caller mentioned that on extremely cold nights like this, she had let someone in her place to warm up and gave them the blankets she had.
