Caller Story – February 24, 2024

Each week we will post a summary of interesting and representative 211 calls. This week, we have a connection from Manitoba.

Isolation is painful. However, there are many programs in the community to foster social connections. 211 Service Navigators know the services that can banish isolation and foster the social attachments that are so necessary for people.

A 211 Service Navigator took a call from an older adult woman in Winnipeg who was feeling socially isolated. She was also worried about not being able to get around easily with no access to transportation, and not being able to keep up with her daily needs like she used to.

The Service Navigator identified the caller’s needs for home health care and transportation assistance and found some programs that could help. He gave her detailed information in order to access these programs.

In addition to this, he realized that the caller was also simply looking for someone to talk to and connect with, as she was feeling socially isolated. He did not rush the caller and she appreciated being able to pick up the phone and contact someone at 211 for a conversation, if only for a short while. It was very much appreciated by the caller.

Additionally, he provided information for a friendly call program where the caller could connect with someone over the phone on a more regular basis, and she was grateful for this resource as well.

The caller thanked 211 for being there and providing help and a friendly voice to talk to.
